When in Rome.

Or when in Boxford in the winter, you might as well accept the fact that winters here really mean business. One sure-fire way to beat the winter blues (and get some great exercise on top of it) is to indulge in winter sports. Boxford's many trails are perfect for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, so what are you waiting for? It's all right outside your door.

In case you need additional inspiration, BTA member and volunteer Mary Ellen Iorio has come up with the following suggested list of locations for prime winter sports fun. Enjoy!

Favorite place to ski: Lockwood Forest
Park in the Bald Hill main parking lot on Middleton Road. Cross the street and enter Lockwood Forest from this point. This set of trails contains both rolling hills and open (gloriously sunny) fields. If you stay on the outer loop, the terrain is excellent for beginners. A skier more comfortable with intermediate trails can take some of the "cut-through" paths, which are hillier and thus more challenging. On sunny days, you won't want to miss crossing the field and basking in the warmth of the sun!

Little known, but great for a 30-minute workout: Lord Woodlot
Park on Lawrence Road and enter at the chain. This is a short set of trails that is excellent for beginners or those short on time. Mostly flat terrain with a passage over a stream and one hill worth mention. (Beginners may want to take off their skis for this one!)

More challenging, but always fun: Wildcat

Enter at Herrick Road parking lot. There are beautiful trails that wind throughout this preserve. Parts can be rocky in light snow, and the trail gets narrow at times -- but Wildcat is always fun! Plan on skiing for 45 minutes to an hour. Enjoy plenty of wildlife -- spot deer, birds and the occasional Fisher Cat track.

Another Great Spot: Rowley State Forest

Park in the lot on Rowley Road (near exit 53). There is a variety of terrain, flat at the beginning and hillier at the end. There is a beautiful grove of Spruce trees that always look festive when the snow sparkles on their branches. Plan on skiing for 45 minutes to an hour.

Leave the skis home and bring the snowshoes: Bald Hill

Park at the main Bald Hill entrance on Middleton Road. Bald Hill is incredible in the winter! The best way to see all that Bald Hill has to offer is on snowshoes. Go off-trail and climb the hills...I've run into over nine deer and have been within 10 feet of the herd! It's a great workout and spectacular scenery. Check out the beaver lodge and dam, cruise around the pond, climb Bald Hill -- all the areas that have been made inaccessible due to beaver activity are easily traveled once the ice is thick!
